• Art Basel Miami 2016. Art and Soul

Art Basel has descended on myself, and my team for the 7th time now and I have several quick words to describe it. Exhausting, colorful, energetic, amazing. As the years passed the heart of Basel in Miami has changed, well actually I can only speak of Wynwood since I rarely get to venture far from my shop EVLworld.

What was once a block filled with galleries has been changed to a block filled mostly with retail and bars and restaurants but the walls, all the walls in Wynwood, that hasn’t changed yet. Still artists from come from near and far to showcase their talents, reminding me of days of watching the colorful pieces that flowed throughout the NYC train system, everyone showing their best just to say they were there. I have still not seen a city like Wynwood and even in its gradual gentrification its still amazes and inspires me.

From my shop I get to converse with some of the best of the best of urban artists but the talk that stood out most this year was the chat I had with a very young artist, I’m guessing she was about 10 and she was just flabbergasted over my art, meeting me and meeting her, and all her incredible energy (her 3 sisters were there as well but this little artist shone brightest to me), she reminded me of my beginnings when then were few opportunities if any but the art energized me from a core I never knew existed in me until I experienced it. I thank this tiny young artist for bringing that memory back to me, reminding me that my life begins and ends with art and the creation of art, not the business end of it and as amazing Wynwood is still its still the embodiment of the business part of creativity, just as it was in LES, Williamsburg, downtown LA, etc. This Basel I was wonderfully reminded of what’s really important.

  • ReMixed Series #2: Flight of Fantasy, Remixed, Remastered

Here is a perfect example of just why I am doing this series. When I first set out on this fantastical, mythological zebra/Pegasus/unicorn I totally intended for her to be completely ethereal, something that would just exist in memory but I got caught up in painting her to be somewhat real and many times when you create something, culinary, visual, creative in any field if you don’t go 100%, I didn’t on the first round you will almost certainly end up id mediocrity and any artist will tell you that’s the absolute worst place to end up. Mediocrity for creative people is what hell is to Christians.

So I dove into her again, opening her stripes, allowing the clouds to drift through her giving the feeling that she is not of the real but really from the mind and already, after displaying the remix version people are responding to her. I loved my original concept of her, now I love the actual visual of her too!

  • ReMixed Series: #1 Murder of Thieves

ReMixed. A series of paintings with all good idea and intention just somehow missed the mark. Sometimes being prolific isn’t the best thing, and some works deserve a second chance.

    #1 Murder of Thieves

I still love the concept and sense of dread that comes with the Raven, the Crow. This black bird that symbolizes such darkness from Poe to the Simpsons to the Omen (the first one, the scary as shit one) the Raven was that symbol. If you have 3 or more Ravens its called a murder, not a gaggle, not a rhumba (rattlesnakes, for real) or a flock, a freaking murder so of course I was eager to paint this one but wow did I miss it, the “Murder” piece style was in this slasher kind of scary movie motif but never translated that and the ravens themselves were way out of proportion and so as much as I wanted to create this piece I failed it.

Revisiting it allowed me to create a new old school graffiti Murder piece which is wild enough to add new color and life to the background while still being at least kind of legible after all the painting is all about the ravens. The ravens got their makeover and now stand more menacing and proportional. The loot, the jewelry, (its been known that crows are attracted to shiny things and will help themselves on occasion to your shiny stuff) I was able now to tie into the colors of the Murder piece so the continuity would be more even, warm colors above and below, cool colors between, like a raven sandwich.

  • ReMixed Series Started. $

ReMixed. A series of paintings with all good idea and intention just somehow missed the mark. Sometimes being prolific isn’t the best thing, and some works deserve a second chance.

“$” From the origami inspired series.

I still wish I could origami graffiti letters for real, how cool would that be. I can however imagine it, or at least I sure thought I could. Sometimes as I am painting a piece that I feel is a great idea and I can feel deep inside that each hour of painting that passes that I’m getting myself into a hole I cant save myself from. I wanted this origami $ piece to work so bad but every step got worse and worse. I tried band aiding it by splashing the lavender and bright orange, a bad attempt at distracting the eye but I knew, I think everyone knew. I may have sold a few paper prints of the original, those should be treasured because they will never be available again. Its important to repeat that I learn from these pieces so much more that the great ones, or the complete duds, these pieces are my school so I love and respect them greatly and any artist that hates something they created needs to re-value and re-guard those pieces because they have so much more to say than the great pieces.

  • Blackbook Series, Part I

I’ve been contemplating the writing of my second book, the follow up to An Unusual Journey for just a bit about 35 years now. Let me ‘splain. Every graffiti artist starts with his blackbook. A hardcover sketchbook that has become synonymous to graffiti aspirers even as of today. Way back around 1981 I had several of these books where I experimented, played with and toyed with my lettering style. Continue reading Blackbook Series, Part I

  • All things Erni

Welcome one and welcome all to my newly, revamped, reworked and re-imagined 2016 EVLworld and all things Erni newsletter! (mild applause haha).

The theme for this newsletter is procrastination, since I have been putting it off for years, it seems, but no longer will I deprive my friends of important, well maybe in the scheme of things in life not that important, but as far as my career goes, fairly important news, info and progress on the myriad of creative chapters in my life today. And the will be discounts for those daring enough to read this thing entirely, honor system completely of course. Continue reading All things Erni

  • Ball Point Series #4

After several years finally getting around to releasing my ball point pen drawings. These are completely drawn without sketch, just from memory on paper using a medium point black paper mate pen, usually on a flight to prevent boredom. The left image is the raw scanned drawing and the right image is the touched up final that i will offer as a limited editions signed on water color paper.  Continue reading Ball Point Series #4

  • The EVLworld groweth! EVLWORLD meets Jaco, Costa Rica

Around 8 years ago I began this artistic adventure, first in Wynwood (Miami’s Art District for those that still haven’t heard of Wynwood) and I’m proud to announce our first growth beyond there. Jaco, Costa Rica will be the 2nd home of EVLworld.

How does a thing like this happen you may ask? Or probably didn’t ask but I will ramble upon it regardless.

It started oddly enough several decades ago when I was doing murals in Boca Raton, for reals, I love when life does these strange and bizarre surf circles around your head. In Boca, I painted many a club and one of the places was a sushi restaurant attached to a club called Boca Rock and Sushi and I met the dude in charge, Adam. A very cool and honest guy swimming in a sea of sharks and as the murals came to life I couldn’t almost feel bad knowing his enthusiasm would be destroyed by the dirty business around him.  Continue reading The EVLworld groweth! My Spray Can Tour part 1. with Stern Rockwell

    March.2016

    A.S.I.A.
Hong Kong was the “business” side of my Asian adventure trip 2016. 4 weeks of travel, 3 major destinations with 3 others slipped in for kicks and fucket list scratch offs.

Having grown up in Chinatown NYC I have a strong fondness to many things Asian, the foods, the cultures, the ladies so having this opportunity to visit the (Asian) mother-land was very exciting. I had been researching the burgeoning urban arts scene prior to my trip and was eager to see it in action. Not many cities in the world can boast a thriving spray paint culture but Hong Kong has that and more! Continue reading Asia

  • Biters & Baloney

I want to apologize for my delay in this follow up. I have been traveling a bunch and haven’t had the time to really get into this until now. When I last left off, I believe I was accusing Annie Preece AKA Love Annie, a street artist from LA, and her cohort Justin Bua of basically stealing, or as I’m used to saying, outright biting my style for their own profit. Continue reading Biters & Baloney

  • So You Wanna Be a Rock Star?

My dear sweet Wynwood, what can i say, you’ve come such a long way. I barely recognize you now. Just 2 years ago we were hanging out and you barely had a change of wardrobe, your streets were dirty, you never shaved, and somehow, you always managed to keep me safe – you had a simple coffee shop where I often found myself writing about you, and a simple bar, where all of your friends came together to play. Continue reading So You Wanna Be a Rock Star?

  • Patriotism and Plagiarism

For over 3 decades I have been known to create many styles through my graffiti, paintings and murals. I’d use any medium: spray paint, airbrush, paint brush, oils, acrylics, even Photoshop – my tools to develop my styles. Neither the tools, nor the surface mattered – paper, canvas, brick, steel or screen – the only important thing was, and still is- is the outcome. Creating cutting edge concepts and styles, always pushing creative envelopes to stay ahead of my peers has always been my MO.  Continue reading Patriotism and Plagiarism

  • Colab NYC!

I think I have been doing CoLab for over 1 year I’d say, in my gallery in Miami but since my downsizing in January I had to bid a silent farewell to Colab. CoLab needs space, a lot of space and when I hosted it in Miami I was able to run a seamless sheet of white paper, about 5’ tall across my wall which ran about 40’ long. Then I would invite friends, friends with kids, artists, and non-artists to come draw on this stream of white paper. Afterwards I would paint over the collage of drawings, cut the sheet apart into many smaller pieces and then sell those for mostly local charities. It has always been a fun event and I was saddened by the thought that I wouldn’t have any more CoLabs.  Continue reading Colab NYC!

  • A & D Style

This is a topic very close to my heart. A topic, time and place all very close and dear to me. Art and Design high school and those years I spent there, mostly cutting classes to hang in the lunch room then having to make them all up because my spiteful butt refused to transfer to my zone school, Seward Park, school for determined dropouts as it was warmingly referred to. • Miami

“I love the smell of aerosol in the morning!”

I remember when I moved to Wynwood  in winter, 2010, winter being a very loose term in Miami. Stints in LA, Chicago and the start of a recession that forced me from NYC were the main catalysts of my southern migration.

Miami, for me really became the Magic city in all aspects of the term. I had been searching for a place with energy, excitement and an overall appreciation for urban arts and I found all that and more there. Continue reading Miami
